About Us Symbol

In 1975, the Catholic Bishops’ Conferences of England & Wales and of Scotland established an insurance advisory body. On 1 September 2017, that body became incorporated as the Catholic Insurance Service Ltd. With the Bishops’ Conferences as its shareholders, CIS is the only Catholic firm of insurance intermediaries in Great Britain. As such, we have an unrivalled understanding of the risks faced by Catholic dioceses and large Catholic organisations and have developed an insurance scheme which comprehensively addresses those risks.

The CIS Insurance Scheme includes:

  • Property
  • Employers’ and Public Liability
  • Legal Expenses
  • Travel

In addition to the insurances included in the CIS Scheme, where required we also assist our clients to arrange against other risks such as Motor Fleet and Engineering Inspection cover. Where insurance against a particular risk is not available or is not a suitable solution we can provide risk management advice (see Services).

Whilst we work with a range of commercial insurers, one benefit of insuring with the Catholic Insurance Service Ltd. is that we are the only insurance intermediary able to access insurance cover for our clients from the Catholic National Mutual Ltd., (‘CNM’). CNM is located in Guernsey and was created in 1979 as a mutual insurance company to provide insurance cover for the risks faced by Catholic organisations based in England, Wales and Scotland. CNM is fully licensed and regulated by the Guernsey Financial Services Commission. CNM’s shareholders are also policyholders insured by the company.

Premiums paid to CNM are retained within the mutual and any profits are used for the benefit of, or are redistributed to, CNM’s shareholders. This ensures that profits remain within the Catholic community rather than being diverted to commercial shareholders.  CNM also funds various risk management initiatives undertaken by CIS which help to mitigate risks borne by CNM policyholders.
